The Motley County Chamber of Commerce will be meeting on Tuesday, August 19th,
at 5:30 pm at the Library in Matador.
That is true, but why is it of any importance to you?
Simple. As a resident of a small town in a rural area, there is no Wal-Mart
nearby, no huge United food store, no Walgreens pharmacy nearby. We have a few
businesses, small, but truly the lifeblood of the communities. Without them,
we would have to close down the towns and all move to the city.
These few businesses that we have are essential to the existence of our small
rural towns. But they need help, since they serve only a small number of potential
customers.
So Chambers of Commerce exist to help the businesses in any way possible-not
only to make locals more aware of what is on offer locally, but to help bring
in tourists who will shop there, to arrange events that will put the spotlight
on local businesses, and to make businesses aware of opportunities that might
help them.
OK, you may be thinking, the Chamber of Commerce may be relevant to the local
businesspeople, but what does that have to do with me? I don't have a business.
All residents, whether they are business owners or not, are member of the local
commercial scene as customers of all the businesses they do not own. First,
everyone benefits from the presence of the local businesses. And second, as
a customer, you know what you want.
Knowing what you want includes ideas about changes you would like to see, and
the businesses need to know that, or how can they serve your needs? And as a
beneficiary of the existing businesses, and dependent on their continued existence,
what ideas do you have to help them?
So it is important for you to know that the Chamber of Commerce is meeting on
Tuesday, August 19th so you can come and participate, be an actor, not just
a critic. Everyone is welcome, and you might just find participation not only
important, but fun and enjoyable as well. So why don't you come and give it
a try?
